NDB’s Mock Trial team is gearing up for another competitive season with intense preparation and dedication. Their journey involves rigorous practices and a strong commitment from team members and faculty moderators alike.
The team members simulate real courtroom scenarios and practice their debate skills during weekly team practice sessions to refine their arguments and strategies.
“A typical mock trial practice session simultaneously has students building their skills and material for competition while also just getting closer as a team,” explains Faculty advisor Jonathan Tomczak ” This is the biggest team on campus and one of the most accomplished, so practice is not just about getting ready, but also about getting to know each other”
This team dynamic is not only vital for maintaining performance but also for ensuring that team members can become closer and bond.
In addition to individual effort, teamwork plays a central role in the team’s success. Collaboration and mutual support during practices and competitions enhance their performance and strengthen their bond.
“Collaboration makes a big difference when you’re in the courtroom,” says Tomczak. “Mock trial is one of the only sports where the coach has no ability to affect the outcome of the competition. The more students trust, know, and feel comfortable with each other, the better they do. So the closeness really helps their performance.”
Furthermore, for many, mock trial isn’t just a competitive activity—it’s a way to develop essential life skills. Junior Cecily Rambod, leader of the witness group, reflects on how these experiences have helped her grow.
“A key skill I’ve developed is definitely public speaking and projecting. Surprisingly, my writing skills have gotten much better too,” highlights Rambod.
“I get into character and get ready by doing my makeup and hair, which really helps me become who I am playing,” adds Rambod, explaining how preparing for a match involves fully immersing herself in her role.
Mock trial also gives students insight into potential career paths. Samantha Scheley adds a personal perspective: “Mock trial helps give me an inside look into my parents’ lives because they are both lawyers.”
As the team looks forward to the season, their experiences highlight the unique aspects of mock trial and the valuable growth it fosters. From memorable cases to the overall impact of their training, these experiences shape their personal and academic development.
“My goal is that everyone on the team enjoys every moment they’re involved—whether with each other, individually, in the courtroom, or out of the courtroom. That, to me, is a sign of success,” emphasizes Tomczak.
This dedication and teamwork not only prepares students for future challenges but also highlights the broader impact of mock trial at NDB, fostering the growth of essential life skills.
