For several years now, NDB has not been able to offer a music class. But, it has not been for a lack of trying. Over the past few years, it has been able to offer students other alternatives, such as the Acapella Club; Musical Tigers, a group of students who sing at school liturgies; and the Tri-School Choir with Mercy B and Serra HS. But, this school year is different. This fall, NDB was able to offer a choir elective course, during zero block, starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 8:15 a.m.
The class’ new teacher is Isabella Custino. She has worked in music education with various age groups before coming to NDB.
“I really like the idea of working at an all-girls school, said Custino. “I grew up … in the Peninsula Girls Chorus, here in the Bay Area. So, being in an ensemble in a girls’ chorus is something that I’ve done my whole life.”
When asked about the importance of music in schools, she said, “I do think that there is a pretty big gap [between society’s appreciation of art and school curriculum] … Especially since the pandemic, there’s just so much emphasis on academic rigor … [This is] super important, but also, the arts is kind of what nourishes our soul and what makes people feel.”
Students who have been waiting for NDB to offer such a class welcome it.
“Before coming in my freshman year, I was told there would be a music program and, to my dismay, there wasn’t anymore by the time I arrived. After expecting it for so long, it was nice to see it again,” said senior Maegan Gomez.
When asked why music is important to her, Gomez said, “Any kind of performing art or art in general is really foundational in … someone’s life, whether that be through a hobby or extracurricular or, in this case, the music class, itself. And, if you’re new to it, you can come into it and learn music.”
Custino has placed an emphasis on designing a curriculum that teaches singing to anyone and everyone of all skill levels.
“You know, choir here, there’s no judgment,” said Custino.
While the Choir elective is currently the only musical class offered its presence on campus is sure to offer a foundation for future performing arts courses at the school.
With a choir elective class now being offered, students hope more performing arts courses will be offered next year and the years to come.
