Labor Day recognizes workers and their contributions to our nation, but for students and teachers, it eases them back into the school year. Many take the opportunity to visit family and friends or find themselves on a short escape from their work.
At NDB, some students visit Lake Tahoe, Arnold, Sonoma, Los Angeles or anywhere in California. “I had so much fun… I went to a Bruno Mars concert.” Junior at NDB, Lara Hollblad Fadiman, went to Las Vegas for her holiday. “I think it’s nice… It’s a way to ease into school without having hardcore school right away.” Having this Labor Day holiday can allow a nice break from home before settling into school, and many students take advantage of it.
However, there are plenty of students who choose to stay home for the holiday to catch up on schoolwork or spend time with their friends. “I hung out with one of my friends… and then we went out to dinner with some friends.” NDB junior, Isabella Michael says, “It feels like a little taste of summer again, just having that extra day off.” Many students find themselves in similar situations.
“I worked on my college applications,” says NDB senior Olivia Caballero, “I also slept.” Having this time to work on college applications can be really helpful to seniors, especially those who may be behind. “I think it’s too early,” Olivia says after being asked about her thoughts on the holiday. It is very close to the start of school, and some people either enjoy it or do not.
Overall, Labor Day is a holiday that allows students to catch up on homework or take a short vacation to escape the chaos before the semester begins to kick in. Many classes already have quizzes or tests, so this small break can help students take a breather and refocus.
