As the Varsity golf team heads into the new season they have been adjusting to the new changes on the team, one being the new assistant coach Dan Corral. Corral played golf in college at Loyola Marymount University, but this is his first year coaching the sport. The Catalyst sat down with Corral to learn about his thoughts on this season.
The Catalyst (TC): What led you to becoming an assistant golf coach at NDB?
Dan Corral (DC): Well, I work with [NDB Athletic Director] Christina Okubo’s husband, Warren, and he said they were looking for an assistant coach, and he knew I was an avid golfer. So he invited me to play.
(TC): What part of the golf game do you think you are best at and how can you help teach players to improve this aspect in their own games?
(DC): Short game, which is probably why Coach Josh wants me working with the girls in terms of chipping and putting. So yeah, short game’s always been my strongest.
(TC): How do you think you could contribute to the team being the best it could be this season?
(DC): I like the opportunity to get back. I’ve been golfing since I was six years old, and I played my first golf tournament when I was nine. So it’s nice to get back to the sport that’s given me so many experiences playing tournaments myself. Hopefully, I can help the team get better.
(TC): What have you enjoyed about coaching at NDB so far this season?
(DC): I mean, I think Coach Josh Lim and I have a really good plan for having games and competitions within the practice to get that superior competition going, and hopefully to have the girls really focused on having chipping and putting and stuff on the range, being a lot more focused and competitive that’ll make the girls better.
