The 2024 NDB water polo season kicked off on September 11 with a challenging first game against Burlingame HS, where the Tigers lost 1-14 but demonstrated strong teamwork and perseverance.
The team, consisting only of a Varsity squad, has been practicing since tryouts began the first week of school. They have been utilizing NDB’s pool three times a week while traveling to Serra HS to use theirs for the remaining two practices.
Although this season has been underway for a few weeks, the team has yet to begin league play, with their first game within the West Bay Athletic League (WBAL) still to come on September 26 against Mercy HS. The season will continue until the end of October, with the senior game occurring on October 16 against Capuchino HS and the final league game on the 24 against Hillsdale HS.
“In the past, I would say [the games are] very fun. Everyone is in high spirits at the start of the game,” said junior Clara Putnam. “Last season, we did a lot better than we did my freshman year, so I think everyone was a lot happier because we won a lot of games last year, and I think we’re hoping to keep up the momentum this year.”
Water polo is known for its physicality, requiring players to control the ball while staying afloat. Players cannot touch the bottom or hold onto the wall during play, leading to a demanding experience.
“[It’s] definitely the most physical sport I’ve ever played. I can manage it, but it can definitely sometimes be a bit overwhelming … But as long as you remain calm and just really focus on yourself … you can get through it,” said sophomore Liv Gould.
Although there is a heavy amount of contact within the sport, players are drawn to it for the community of players as well as a love for strategic aspects. As the Tigers head into the season, they plan to take what they have been working on in practice as they battle for their school in the pool.
