On Wednesday, May 15, the valedictorian and salutatorian were announced at Academic Awards Night, an event where selected students are recognized for their exceptional academic achievements. For the graduating class of 2024, Trisha Garud was named valedictorian, while Mallory Moore was selected as salutatorian.
The valedictorian is selected based on a student’s grade point average and their commitment to extracurriculars and leadership positions at NDB. This distinction was a testament to Garud’s strong work ethic and passion for learning.
In her senior year, she was named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which was earned after being in the top 0.5% of PSAT takers during her junior year. Her active participation and creativity in class have contributed to her Outstanding Achievement Award in AP Art History and her induction as a member of the French, Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Societies.
Outside of the classroom, Garud works as a hospitality volunteer at the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, while also educating underprivileged communities on STEM-related subjects, qualifying her for the U.S. Presidential Gold Service Award four years in a row. When asked about who helped her earn this distinction, Garud expressed her gratitude toward her teachers.
“I think we have such a distinguished group of people who are just the most amazing role models for us and each and every teacher I’ve had has probably been my favorite teacher,” said Garud.
As valedictorian, Garud will give a speech to her fellow graduating class.
“Arguably the best part of becoming valedictorian is that the school gives me the gift of seven hundred people’s attention all at once,” said Garud. “That’s probably what I’m most excited for, because [not] many people get that opportunity in their lives, and at such a pivotal moment.”
Though the criteria to earn the honor of salutatorian is similar, there is more of an emphasis on community service and involvement on campus.
Salutatorian Mallory Moore is a driven individual who has consistently shined in academics, athletics and as a leader at NDB. She has earned Outstanding Achievement Awards in Advanced Placement and honors level computer science, math, science and Spanish classes and was the recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award for her achievements in science.
As captain of the varsity water polo and varsity swimming teams, she has won all-league honors and was voted most valuable player by her teammates. In addition, she served on student council before being elected to serve as the spirit director of the Associate Student Body.
“I think my teachers push me to do better, especially Dr. Hegarty, [who] always encourages me to try new things, take really hard classes and do my best,” said Moore.
Moore will also give a farewell speech to her graduating class.
“I am excited and honored to be speaking at graduation,” said Moore. “I hope to honor my classmates and all our hard work and fun memories.”
As graduation approaches, Garud and Moore look forward to attending prestigious universities in the fall. Garud will attend Georgetown University and Moore will attend Cornell University.
