On May 3rd, the movie “The Fall Guy,” directed by David Leitch, was released in theaters for the first time. The film is loosely based on the television series written by Glen A. Larson, and was adapted by Leitch for a more modern take on the original show.
This two-hour film absolutely has something for any kind of audience. It features dramatic action scenes that keep all eyes glued to the screen, a heartrending romance that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, and a mystery full of unexpected twists and new discoveries.
The film stars one of the most familiar names in the movie industry: Ryan Gosling, portraying seasoned stuntman Colt Seavers who returns to the show business a year after a life-threatening accident on set that forced him to retire. He arrives on set hoping to reconnect with his former love Jody Moreno, played by renowned actress Emily Blunt, but soon finds himself entangled in an action-packed mystery while still trying to win Jody back.
Other notable faces in the film include Hannah Waddingham as movie producer Gail Mayer, and actor Arron Taylor-Jonnson as the lead antagonist, Tom Ryder.
The movie had the audience roaring with every line Gosling delivered – the actor always incorporated his signature Gosling charm and humor into each scene. The action scenes were gripping and there were more than a few intense moments that left everyone in the theater holding their breath. One of the most interesting things about the movie was that instead of following the stale action movie trope of jumping between action scenes and romance, much of the “sappier” monologues were interconnected with the most extreme action segments. This made for a much more interesting and faster-paced film.
Aside from the stunts and the special effects that brought the movie to life, another subtlety was the actors’ small gestures and face changes, especially during these action-heavy scenes. Gosling and Blunt’s poignant facial expressions and subtle movements were able to truly capture the feelings of heartbreak, joy, and love – adding yet another layer of dimension to the movie.
It was rated 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and given a 7.3 on IMDb. Although it is rated PG-13, it is definitely an enjoyable film for the whole family, with minimal swearing and some violence. That being said, this was a movie to watch and is something to bring all your friends and family with you to watch.
