Junior Andie Wong will serve as the editor in chief of The Catalyst, NDB’s student newspaper, for the 2024-2025 school year.
“Taking on this new position obviously comes with lots of new responsibilities that I’m definitely nervous for, but super excited to take on,” said Wong. “I’m honestly really looking forward to welcoming a new staff … I think that there’s a lot more that I wanna do with … our graphics and our photos just so that we can increase readership.”
Wong has been involved with NDB’s Journalism program since her sophomore year and started as a member of the Journalism Club, earning the positions of contributing writer and staff writer. She is currently taking the Journalism I elective class and holding the position of news editor.
When asked what readers could expect from her leadership of The Catalyst, Wong reflected on how she hopes to build on her experience from this year.
“I discovered my passion for journalism after realizing how creative the staff and I could be when approaching every article and page in the newspaper,” said Wong. “It is incredible to have the opportunity to share our perspective on pressing issues in our community.”
Outgoing Editor in Chief Mia Muzzi will continue in her position until she graduates in early June. She will work closely with Wong and help transition her to the new role.
”We looked for someone who would really take charge with The Catalyst and Tiger TV next year and someone who is skilled in writing and in leadership,” said Muzzi. “I think that Andie really represents the qualities that an editor in chief needs to have because she’s really dependable and she always keeps everybody in line. She’s just really a great person to have on the team and she … uplifts everybody in their writing and their skill level and is definitely somebody that I feel next year’s staff will be able to turn to. She’s going to do amazing things [for] The Catalyst and Tiger TV.”
The editor in chief is in charge of the school newspaper and broadcast news show, leading its editorial staff and moderating the Journalism Club, all in the production of both publications and their social media platforms. While the selection process is an ongoing process throughout the year, the announcement of the next editor in chief usually happens before production begins on the last issue of the school year.
