On March 21, the Mock Trial Showcase, where prosecution and defense argued over whether or not Tobie Clark was the murderer of business associate Keiren Sunshine, occurred. Students had been preparing for this trial for months, working closely with Varsity and JV teams to become a character, fight against warrants and prove if the defendant was innocent or guilty.
“I feel that my work has been a bit more relaxed than the people in competition because I had more time to work on my materials,” said Pre-Trial Attorney Shay Karmegam.
The case followed the story of Toby Clark, an employee for a company that works with medical supplies, and Kieren Sunshine, who directs the company. When Clark discovered that one of their products contained a metal that could potentially harm people, he started arguing with Keiran about whether they should inform the board.
When Kieren is suddenly found dead the night before the meeting, all fingers start pointing at Clark. The case covered all the details about potential possibilities or how the night truly unfolded.
All Showcase team members made an effort to make their presentation convincing and learned a lot about their rights and how working hard as a team produces impressive results.
“Showcase is a learning experience. It taught me how to appear more confident when presenting my case, even if I’m really nervous. Mock Trial has also taught me that it’s better to understand things than memorize them. It also taught me how to convince myself to be confident even in times of extreme nervousness,” reflected Karmegan.
This trial was very close, with many exciting arguments and crazy witnesses. Still, in the end, the Prosecution won the Pretrial and the Defense came out on top for the main trial.
