On March 16, San Francisco hosted their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which started at 11:30 a.m. and consisted of floats roaming down Market Street and teenagers with their friends hanging out near the Civic Center. Although St. Patrick’s Day is not a legal holiday in the United States, it is always an exciting day across the country.
New York City goes all out on this special day by hosting their huge annual parade and Chicago celebrates by dying the Chicago River green. San Francisco, on the other hand, is less about the parade and more about the social activities.
“I went to the parade last year and thought it was fun, but the parade itself is a little anticlimactic. However, it is really fun to go up to the city in a cute green outfit. I would recommend it to upperclassmen because the crowd is on the older side,” explained senior Julia Breckenridge.
Even though the parade is entertaining and something to go see, it is also exciting to see classmates outside of school, even friends from other high schools. Students are seen gravitating towards the social part of the parade instead of the actual parade itself.
“I feel like going to the parade is such a rite of passage and something that all high schoolers need to experience,” explained parade attendee and senior Fiona Maroun.
While watching the parade gave viewers insight into Irish culture, it also provided a perspective on high school culture.
