On March 8, NDB opened up its campus to the little sisters of students for the annual Little Sister Day. NDB students were offered the opportunity to bring any younger sister, cousin, or family friend to school with them for the day. The little sisters ranged from 4-6 graders and every student was only allowed to invite one sister each. Students with more than one little sister had the option to ask a friend to help out.
The sisters began their day at 8:30 with the rest of the NDB students. They were checked in at the front desk and given a visitor nametag. Their older sisters either picked them up there or drove with them to school. They stayed with their older sisters for their first two classes of the B-day schedule.
The little sisters got to experience high school classes and had the opportunity to do it with their older sisters. Throughout the day, they sat next to their sisters, who introduced them to their teachers and included them during class time.
After the first two academic classes, the little and big sisters were released early for lunch. The lunch menu offered a variety of options, with the main course being grilled cheese, tomato soup and grilled vegetables and the choice of using the make-your-own salad bar and sandwich bar. The girls were able to eat and enjoy their lunch with their older sisters and friends.
“The first class was my favorite. I had never heard of forensics science before so I loved going to that class with my older sister,” 4th grader Mackenzie Strain said. “I got to learn how to do fingerprints.”
Following lunch, the little sisters had more activities to look forward to. During block 7, the big sisters dropped them off in the innovation lab for activities with Ambassador Board members. The little sisters were greeted with an elaborate photo booth decked with balloons, streamers and accessories. Each pair took a Polaroid picture and said their goodbyes for the day.
The big sisters returned to their block 7 classes while the little sisters enjoyed playing pop culture Jeopardy, cookie decorating and coloring hosted by the Ambassador Board.
“We had to think about what is interesting to young girls from that 9-12 age range. In years past, we have struggled to make fun activities for the girls that are actually engaging,” Ambassador Board Member Alyssa Kimoto said. “Thanks to Adriana Esguerra and Kayleigh O’Reilly, two other Ambassador Board members, the little sisters were engaged and super excited about the pop-culture jeopardy game that they compiled.”
To conclude their day on campus, each little sister was given a goodie bag before leaving at 1:30.
NDB’s annual Little Sister Day allows students to bring their younger loved ones to campus and give them the chance to see what a day in the life of high school looks like while spending time with their big sister.
