On Wednesday, March 13, the NDB varsity lacrosse team played Notre Dame HS San Jose at Crystal Springs Middle School for the first “Stick it to Cancer” game.
Stick it to Cancer, brought to NDB through Dig Pink President Francesca Arbelaez, is a nationwide organization full of participants and volunteers that promote awareness about lowering risk of breast cancer and generate funds to support Boarding for Breast Cancer’s life-saving efforts.
“The Dig Pink volleyball game is a singular event in October, and then nothing else is done for the rest of the year,” Arbelaez shared. “I think it’s important that we have at least one other event that promotes breast cancer awareness. And, what time is better than Women’s History Month?”
Arbelaez first heard about the organization through the American Cancer Society. They have a nationwide program that is similar to that of Dig Pink.
In recognition of the game, the Dig Pink Club hosted a bake sale full of sweet treats to raise money for Boarding for Breast Cancer. They sold an abundance of cupcakes, cookies, brownies and gluten free desserts. The bake sale was located in the Arcade from Monday through Wednesday in preparation for the game later that evening. Altogether, NDB raised over $150.
“Just like Dig Pink, the funds we raise go to Boarding for Breast Cancer, a program that supports survivors in getting back on their feet as well as educating youth about how to be proactive about your health,” Arbelaez said.
The varsity lacrosse team beat Notre Dame San Jose with a final score of 10-8. Due to the cause and the spirit point event hosted by ASB, the game brought out a large fan base and, hopefully, the start of a new annual NDB tradition.
