NDB is renown for its robust athletics program. But, even with 14 different sports offered, there are student athletes who participate in other sports outside of the school community. The sport of sailing is a passion for some Tigers who have taken the initiative to practice and compete in it.
In the Bay Area community, participating in sailing is a big time commitment. It requires multiple practices and competitions, known as regattas. It also needs a great deal of patience because many of the skills necessary to navigate a boat take time to practice and master.
“Sailing requires a unique mix of tactical skills and strategy,” said senior Natalia Morrow. “You need to have the technical skills to be successful in boat handling.”
The opportunity to make close connections with other around you, especially your boat crew, is prominent when learning the sport. While practicing on the water, there is often a lot of time to talk with your sailing partner, which creates unique bonds similar to those of other sports.
Besides the technical skills required, there are many other factors that are important for success. These range from those learned directly from sailing to everyday skills that are only enhanced by the challenging sport.
“Sailing is a lot about communication, and learning to work well with your partner, which are great skills outside of sailing as well,” said senior Mallory Moore.
The drive of these student athletes who pursue their passion for sports outside NDB, like these participating in sailing, illustrate the diverse interests of our student body as well as the dedication and talent within our community.
“NDB is fortunate to not only have great student-athletes that compete for NDB, but also has student-athletes that participate in highly competitive programs outside of NDB,” said Athletic Director Christina Okubo. “NDB provides support and understanding to the delicate balance of academics and the time commitment necessary for those students to excel in their sport.”
