Two of the most celebrated holidays in the United States are Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving, celebrated on November 23, is a day when families gather together and give thanks for the blessings they have received. The classic American Thanksgiving dinner is usually portrayed as a decadent spread, with a turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.
Common Thanksgiving symbols include autumn colors like orange, yellow, and red, and pictures of turkeys and pilgrims are popular.
“I love Thanksgiving,” says Freshman Shay Karmegam. “The traditions are so fun and I love the family togetherness.”
Celebrated on December 25, Christmas is a time when families gather together to decorate the Christmas tree, have dinner and open presents together. Christmas is one of the biggest and most anticipated national holidays of the year; restaurants, homes, and businesses decorate themselves with tinsel and Santa Claus-themed decor.
Holiday-themed music is always a hit, with singers like Mariah Carey and Michael Buble dominating the music industry during the winter months. Candy canes, peppermints and mint-flavored treats are also popular around Christmastime.
Companies such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts even release a limited-time Christmas menu to celebrate the holiday.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are both times to celebrate togetherness. It is a great time to spend time with friends, family, and relatives, and both holidays are something to appreciate and enjoy.
