For early action and early decision applicants, college acceptance/rejection letters will be arriving soon. Many of the senior students will be having their futures decided during the months of December and January this year. With some rejection letters bound to come, there is ultimately only one thing that can help the situation: humor.
Rejection walls are a common activity that high schools will participate in during the Spring semester. As rejection letters are being received, they are also being posted on a public wall on campus for everyone to see. The letters do not include the name of the student who was rejected but do show the name of the school so everyone can see it. While this may seem like a complete invasion of privacy and a depressing act, it is surprisingly freeing and stress-relieving for students.
“If you didn’t get into your dream school and saw someone else also got rejected from the same school it could make you feel better because like you aren’t alone,” said senior Giorgia Gallegos.
Allowing students to display the unfortunate letters could potentially make other students feel better about not getting into the same school. The rejection wall is not about the actual act of getting rejected but rather about the laughs between students that it could provoke.
While it is important to remember that everyone will end up at the school that is right for them, it also needs to be known how difficult getting into college has become. College acceptance rates are dropping drastically due to test scores, increasing selectivity, and high costs. A lot of these are uncontrollable factors that make it harder and harder each year for students to get accepted but making a joke out of it is a great way to cope.
