While many believe that Christmas should be left until after Thanksgiving passes, some are fully convinced that Christmas begins on November 1.
Once the calendar hits November 1, many people jump into the holiday spirit. Over Thanksgiving break, many set aside the time to purchase or set up their Christmas tree, beginning celebrations of the holiday season with purchasing or setting up their tree. They believe that the Christmas season shouldn’t be limited to just a few short weeks. Many people want to savor the holiday spirit by decorating and setting up before Thanksgiving. In many households, the holiday of Thanksgiving is brushed aside in preparation for the next, “bigger” holiday.
Senior Diandra Sahouria starts early with the Christmas festivities and decorations, putting up her tree before Thanksgiving.
“Putting the tree up earlier makes the house feel more like Christmas for a longer period of time,” Sahouria shared. “The tree is the symbol of Christmas, and maybe the music isn’t there yet, but having the tree up immediately gets me in the festive mood.”
However, the other side of the debate leans with those who prefer to wait for Thanksgiving to pass. They believe that the celebration of Thanksgiving deserves its own recognition. By setting up Christmas trees and decorations before Thanksgiving, the holiday is skipped over.
Sophomore Adrianna Chu waits to put up Christmas decorations until after the holiday of Thanksgiving has passed.
“Because we wait, it makes Christmas a little more special, especially because Thanksgiving is a holiday in itself,” said Chu. “The main reason is because they are actually much cheaper after as well.”
While the debate still stands over whether Christmas trees and decorations should be up before or after Thanksgiving, the personal choice is still apparent as people make their own decisions about when to decorate for Christmas.
