It is hard to miss the numerous strawberry açai’s and pumpkin spice lattes in the hands of the students when walking through the NDB halls. It is common for NDB students to get Starbucks before school. Whether that’s where they stop for breakfast in the morning or they can’t go a day without a delicious drink, everyone has a reason to constantly drink these beverages. However, how do these drinks affect students’ days when they get Starbucks vs. when they don’t? Does going to Starbucks before school affect when and how students get to school, tardy or not. How much money is being spent on Starbucks for an average NDB student? How do these factors impact the worth of Starbucks drinks?
In general, many students rely on Starbucks as a reward during school hours. Lucy Livingston, a senior at NDB, said, “I get it 5 days a week, and it makes me happy when I am having a rough day and when I am tired.”
Elizabeth Clyne, also a senior at NDB, said, “It makes me happy because it is something I enjoy.”
Sophomore, Niki Tzartzanis, said that when she doesn’t get Starbucks during the day, “I am typically quite tired and have a headache.” These perspectives show that some students need their morning drinks to have a good day, or even just get through it.
For some students, Starbucks drinks may be simply an enjoyable part of their day, other students rely on it. However, students know that getting down Ralston at peak rush hour in the morning is a trek, so does a stop at Starbucks in the morning affect a student’s attendance?
Sophomore, Anna Street, said, “I get to school in the morning at 7:30. When I go to Starbucks, I get there closer to 7:45. If I was running late and made a stop at Starbucks, it would be more likely I’d be late for class.” She also said, “I think going to Starbucks in the morning is a fun way to start the day, but you definitely have to pay attention to the time.”
Finally, the question many students ask themselves is, how much money do I actually spend on Starbucks during a week or even a year? On average, students get Starbucks around 4 times a week with drinks costing about $5.50 each, meaning they spend $22 a week on Starbucks, coming out to around $945.00 a school year on Starbucks and $2,007.50 in a full calendar year. Is Starbucks worth this large amount of money?
It is clear that Starbucks is extremely popular at NDB, and students enjoy it more than anything. Even when they are spending $22 a week or running late to school, these delicious beverages have made an impact on students’ everyday life. Starbucks makes the community happy and wakes people up in the morning.
