As the Varsity Golf Team tees off their 2023 season, they adjusted to some new changes within the team. This season, they welcomed Joshua Lim as their new head coach. With this change from last year, the team has been adapting to new coaching methods as well as new teammates with the addition of freshmen and the loss of last year’s seniors. Lim gave some insight into his first season as a golf coach.
“In terms of golf, there are a lot of different factors that are important in improving your overall game,” said Lim. “I think, most importantly, everyone needs to work on their short game, like the shorter shots around the greens and rolling it in the hole. I’ve also been pushing a lot of physical fitness, so I’ve been doing a lot of that too.”
To improve on the physical aspects of golf, the team practices four times a week in between matches at Mariners Point in Foster City and does weights once a week in the school weight room. For home matches, they compete at Moffett Field in Mountain View. They will compete at various courses throughout the season, such as Menlo Country Club and Crystal Springs Golf Course. Aside from the results of the season, having fun and working on personal skills and improvement is also very important for the golf team and is one of the main goals for their coach this year.
“As long as everyone feels like they’ve improved since this season started, then I think I achieved my role as coach,” said Lim. “In terms of results, I don’t think we’re looking for too much. Just instilling confidence in the girls is a good start. It’s making sure that they feel comfortable on the course and in competition.”
The team had their first match at the Burlingame Country Club on August 28, where they competed against both Mercy Burlingame HS and Crystal Springs HS. Although the team lost, senior Daniella DeMera celebrated a hole-in-one during the match on a par-3, 75-yard hole, one of the most difficult on the course. Their next match was against Castilleja HS and Notre Dame HS San Jose, followed by a match against Sacred Heart Prep HS and then King’s Academy and Menlo School.
The golf team is ready for its long season ahead and will continue to compete against the other schools in the WBAL as they hope to qualify for CCS in the weeks to come.
