Having to wear school uniforms has been a hot topic of discussion for many teens. Some may even choose where they go to school based on if there is a uniform. Students want to express themselves by having the freedom of choosing their own clothing that shows their mood and personality, and a uniform requirement seems to take away this creativity. However, there are many reasons why uniforms are beneficial to all students in school.
The first benefit of having everyone wear the same thing to school everyday is that it reduces bullying and encourages equality. Because everybody has their own styles and personalities and likes all different things, choice of clothing might cause a discrepancy within classrooms. No uniform on a day to day basis could result in jealousy towards those who are able to afford expensive clothing versus those who cannot.
Wearing a uniform at school also allows students to focus. Rather than staring and worrying about what others are wearing and how it compares to their own outfit, students can blur out those distractions and turn their attention to learning and building community.
For the rough mornings when it is difficult to get out of bed, uniforms can be a huge help in time management when getting ready for school. Especially for those who have a hard time getting up, having a uniform to rely on may allow one to lay back in bed and afford a few more minutes of needed rest. Choosing a top, finding bottoms to go with it, and then shoes to match can take up a lot of extra time. However, having a uniform solves that issue because you have limited choices and reduces decision-making time. It may allow a student more time to eat their breakfast or chat with their family before the busy day ahead or, as stated before, get a few extra minutes of sleep.
Lastly, school uniforms create a sense of school unity. This unity ties together students and gives a bond that allows them to feel more comfortable. It can give others who recognize someone wearing the uniform to feel a sense of trust. Wearing similar clothing provides a close community that builds school pride and school spirit. A uniform can represent a school and its students, and therefore create a sense of belonging. Uniforms have many benefits for students, including all those at NDB.
