Every year, the Tri-School theater puts on a fall and spring play, composed of a cast and crew made up of students from NDB, Serra and Mercy. This year, the 2023 Fall Tri-School play is “As You Like It” by Shakespeare, which is a comedy about two friends, Rosalind and Celia, as they are banished from their hometown.
The cast has been rehearsing since the end of August, which was right after the auditions finished. Currently, they must attend two and a half hours of rehearsal a day. Later in the season the rehearsals will be five hours long and will mainly focus on the technical aspect of a show.
Sianna Kiebler, a junior at NDB, was cast as Rosalind, the main character in “As You Like It.”
“I’m so excited for the costuming, the sets, the technical parts of it are gonna be fantastic,” said Kiebler. “I’m excited to do Shakespeare, it’s my first time. I think it’s going to be difficult, but I’m trying my best to make it more interesting than people expect. And I’m excited for the people. I love the people, I love the energy. It’s always a fun time.”
Although the cast is excited about the finished product, there are some challenges with performing this show and mastering certain aspects of Shakespeare’s work.
“But Shakespeare, the language is tough,” said Director Lawrence Long. “Sometimes you’re dealing with stories that people have heard over and over and over again . . . It’s the fun kind of challenging that we get to kind of delve into and say, ‘What can we do here to convey the feeling we want the audience to have, what are the things we do to keep them engaged as the show goes on?’”
Despite any difficulties, many members are focussing more on the excitement of the show.
“I think it’s a really fun show, Mr. Long added a lot of stuff to make it our own interpretation,” said sophomore actress Zoe Hart. “Especially making it pirate themed, which is going to be really fun because we’re adding in some sea shanties, and lots of really fun costumes.”
The cast and crew of “As You Like It” have been working hard to create an amazing play that many people will enjoy this fall. The show will open on October 20 and will close 8 days later, on the 28, with tickets being available in October.
