The Catalyst (TC): What do you think about the announcement to continue online distance learning until December?
Audrey Sanguinetti (AS): I’m actually really excited to do online learning until December because I feel that a lot of people are kind of ignoring social distancing right now, and not following the proper guidelines so I feel that if everyone were to come back to school, it would put a lot of people at risk. And I think that the teachers also don’t have that choice to not go whereas the students do. So I think it’s better for everyone’s safety as well as the teachers.
TC: How would you feel going on campus with others who, as you said, might not be careful with hand washing and mask wearing?
AS: Personally I would not be very comfortable just because even though we’re wearing a mask and somewhat taking some precautions I feel like there’s always a risk. I mean, some people might not wear a mask properly. Some people will be breaking social distancing and seeing other people. So I think there’s no way to tell whether everyone would be safe or not but from what I can see a lot of people at our school aren’t following the rules. So, I personally would not feel safe being there with them.
TC: How has staying home affected your work and home life?
AS: When quarantine began, it wasn’t much, because I wasn’t expecting it to last for so long, but I think once I got into it, my mental health really became worse. And I don’t know if that’s necessarily from online learning, but I think it’s as well being isolated and forced to be by yourself and with your family, which in some cases will be nerve racking for people, especially extroverts but during this time I’ve also learned I’m a very introverted person. And I think that although it’s been hard it’s allowed for me to grow as an individual from getting away from certain toxic environments.
