Since many schools have closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, many high school students are going to school online in what is called distance learning. Some of them communicate with their teachers via email or websites, like gClassroom and Schoology. Others participate in online classrooms via video conferencing apps, like Google Hangouts and Zoom. The Catalyst interviewed Sophia Bouzid, senior at NDB, about her experiences going to school online. She is enrolled in several AP courses, so she has been greatly affected by the transition to online schooling.

The Catalyst (TC): What is a typical day of school like for you?

Sophia Bouzid (SB): I wake up. I contemplate why I’m still alive and the meaning of my life. I make myself an iced coffee because I can’t buy Starbucks. Then, I regretfully open Zoom and… I turn off my camera and mute, and then I just sit back and relax. Then, I workout with Parker [and] my Pamela Reif workout – I do abs and full body… Then, I eat a lot of food because I feel like I’ve earned it after my hour workout everyday. And then, I cry about college. And then, I go to sleep at a really, really late hour.

TC: How are you coping with social distancing and keeping in touch with your friends?

SB: I’m doing Pamela workouts twice a day on FaceTime, and I’m also watching Disney+ movies on Zoom with my friends.

TC: Do you prefer online learning or on-campus learning?

SB: Online learning because I have the option of mute and hide camera.
