Claire Manuel, junior at Woodside High School

Catalyst(CS):

First question: what is your school doing for the fall semester? Are you on campus or using a hybrid model or are you all online?

Claire Manuel(CM):

We’re completely online, we’ve laid up our schedule a little bit different from our normal school schedule, our classes end either at around 1:00 or 2:30, which is a lot earlier than normal. The way that they’ve split it up is interesting. We have 10 minute breaks or 15 minute breaks in between our classes. But it’s all completely online through zoom.

CS:

And what do you wish your school was doing for the fall semester?

CM:

Well, I definitely prefer completely in person, but I understand the reasoning behind doing it completely online. I would like to maybe switch to a hybrid model, but I know so far that they’ve already decided we’re doing online through January, so I don’t think they’re going to change it but I kind of hope they do.

CS:

Okay, last question, how are you doing with online school right now: academically, socially or personally?

CM:

Personally, I don’t like online, it is kind of a lot of screen time staring at my computer. Some of my classes have been translated fairly well like English class is the same and I can keep up with it, but other classes, like my math class or science class don’t really translate very well to online. So for me, and I know for a lot of others it is a lot harder. Personally one of the classes I’ve been struggling with the most is my language class, my French class. We have a new teacher, so we can’t really get to know her and she can’t get to know us and when the audio is bad, it makes listening to our language a lot harder.
