January 2019 Netflix recommendations

Definitely, Maybe (Jan. 1) – This rom-com starring Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Banks is cute and creative, and the perfect thing to watch if you’re looking for a sweet movie to take up a couple of hours on a lazy weekend. Definitely, Maybe involves Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) explaining to his daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin), about his life before she was born and how he met her mother (whom he is in the process of divorcing). This involves him describing his three serious relationships from the past decade as Maya tries to guess which woman is her mother.

Tidying Up With Marie Kondo (Jan 1.) – This newly released Netflix special has already been widely memed, criticized, and praised. Its star, Marie Kondo, is already a familiar name to many as she has also released a book about tidying up that focuses on her Konmari method of ridding one’s house of items that no longer bring them joy. The eight episodes each focus on a family in the Los Angeles area that Kondo visits and offers advice to in order to help them declutter and organize their lives.

Sex Education (Jan. 11) – This Netflix original series stars Asa Butterfield as awkward teen Otis Milburn, and Gill Anderson as his sex therapist mother Jean. The series follows the ups and downs of Otis and his classmate, rebellious Maeve Wiley, and their entrepreneurial attempt to offer sessions with Otis to talk through relationship and sex problems for students at their school. A surprisingly wholesome show that, while it has its share of high school cliches, features characters facing realistic challenges in their personal lives in an honest and humorous way.

The Incredibles: 2 (Jan. 30) – The much-anticipated sequel to The Incredibles will now be available on Netflix. This movie focused more on Mrs. Incredible and her powers and skills while also showcasing the powers of Violet, Dash, and even Jack-Jack, compared to the Mr. Incredible-centric first movie. The Incredibles continue to grapple with the evolving role of superheroes in modern society, and their role in an evolving world.
